Look for slight irregularities in patterns (a sign of hand weaving),crisp selvedge edges. Machine-made imitations usually have blurry motifs and one-sided prints.

Sambalpuri Ikat, locally called Bandha, is a centuries-old handloom tradition from Western Odisha. The uniqueness lies in the tie-dyeing of yarns before weaving, which produces reversible motifs such as shankha (conch), chakra (wheel), phula (flowers), and pasapalli (checks). Each kurti is a work of art, often taking weeks to complete.

Each Sambalpuri kurti is completely handwoven, with the design dyed into the yarn before weaving. The process is time-intensive(5–15 days, depending on complexity) and requires skilled craftsmanship. Factors like material (cotton vs silk), dye quality, motif complexity, and weaving time influence the price. Buying directly supports weavers and sustains a heritage craft.

As with all pure handwoven cotton fabrics, minor shrinkage of up to 5% is normal, but if proper wash care instructions are followed, shrinkage can be controlled upto 2%.
